“Old Thanjavur paintings” emerges from a late phase of South Indian Classical art. These paintings are characterised by rich flat and vivid colours, with simple iconic compositions, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces of rarely precious and semiprecious stones. 

Tanjore painting originated in the town of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. Developed around 1600 AD, Tanjore paintings have gained a GI tag by the Government of India in 2007.

 Tanjore painting is known for its colourful vibrancy, intricate relief and gold foil work. Initially, the art form depicted Hindu gods and goddesses as its subjects, but slowly it was commissioned by influential nobles and patrons. Traditionally done on wooden planks, Tanjore arises as a visual force that cannot be ignored.
